Hygiene
The foundation of successful dental care is prevention of tooth decay and
periodontal disease in the first place through the regular removal of
plaque and tartar from the tooth surfaces. During your visit, the hygienist
cleans your teeth with traditional hand instruments and the ultrasonic
scaler to loosen calculus from the tooth surface, checks the pockets
around each tooth, and polishes and flosses your teeth. The frequency
of your visits to the hygienist are based on your oral health and needs.
Depending on the length of time between your visits, the dentist will
perform an exam and x-rays may be required.
Restoration
Restorative dentistry is used to strengthen and protect a compromised
tooth and to improve its appearance. Restoration includes "fillings",
necessary when a portion of the tooth is removed by the dentist as a
result of decay or break, a
"
cap" or crown where a filling is no longer adequate to restore shape
and function, and, where a tooth is missing, a non-removable "bridge" can
be placed to keep surrounding teeth in position maintaining the dental
arch's integrity. To actually replace an extracted or missing tooth,
an implant may
be placed into the jawbone by a specialist. Once the implant integrates
into the jaw, we can restore it with a crown. an alternate form of restoration
is removable appliances, including partial and full dentures, depending
upon
the number and condition of remaining teeth.
Aesthetic Dentistry
Aesthetic dentistry encompasses restoration as described above, as well
as simply filling in "gaps" between teeth and changing their shape
or color through the use of whitening techniques, bonded resin fillings
and porcelain veneers. Orthodontics in conjunction with a specialist,
utilized to
treat misaligned teeth and jaws, can also be utilized for the purpose
of improving the appearance of the patient's smile.
Root Canal Therapy
When the nerve of a tooth becomes inflamed or infected, a root canal is
necessary so that the tooth can be maintained and restored. Some root canals
can be preformed in our office.
Oral Surgery
When a tooth cannot be saved it must be extracted. While a specialist is
required for some particularly difficult extractions, the majority can be
performed in our office. Implants, bridges and removable appliances can be
used to replace missing teeth.
